A New Light on the Cinema Experience – Multiplex Cinema in Hamburg's Überseequartier

As a lighting design office, we have already had the opportunity to realize numerous national and international projects, but a cinema of this dimension was a first for us too. In the newly opened Kinopolis multiplex cinema in Westfield Überseequartier Hamburg, one of the most significant urban development projects of recent years, we worked with the interior designers at Chapman Taylor Düsseldorf to develop the lighting design for all public areas.

The concept extends over two floors and includes the foyer, lounge areas and access to the cinemas. Our goal: to welcome visitors with a warm, inviting atmosphere as soon as they enter and to extend the cinema experience far beyond the film itself. Light becomes an integral part of modern Kinopolis marketing, from the first moment when ordering popcorn to spending time in the lounge areas.

With over three thousand individually controlled lighting points, a precisely staged choreography is created that underlines architecture, brand and experience alike. Nothing is left to chance: colors, accents and scenes are deliberately set to evoke emotions, increase the quality of stay and reflect the special character of the location, in the heart of Hamburg within sight of the harbor.

The feedback from visitors and the press confirms: this cinema is more than just a place to watch films, it is an event, a space that people like to visit again. For us at Lumen 3, it was a once in a lifetime project that we were proud and passionate to be a part of, from the initial ideas to the final programming of the lighting scenes.
